Reflection on VOKI and Wordle
The activity on the voki tonight was neat. We had a chance to utilize Google Earth. I had only fiddled around with Google Maps previously. One could go on a sightseeing tour or view photos of a chosen destination. This is a tool that I would use personally to map out vacations. In the classroom I could use the geometric coordinates of the latitude and longitude system to form various types of exercises.
The requirements for this exercise was to find a destination where we would like to visit and locate it on Google Earth. After we had done this we were to form a list of words describing our destination, without actually mentioning it. We then went to www.wordle.net and created a graphic image of words. You can see the image I created above. We then emailed the wordle we had created to a friend, who guessed where we had chosen to visit on Google Earth. Romiro presented his guess to be in the form of the VOKI above. I did the same for him.
I think the wordle is a great tool to inspire creativity. I can see this tool being really popular with teenagers. Words can have so many meanings, and to list them in a visually appealing way, can have an even greater impact. The Voki is interesting. I can see this being popular for grade school and mid-school kids. If the kids had the tools to embed their own voices, that would be great. I do think that is one of the downside to the voices on the voki’s. They are monotone and lack any emotion.
Overall, I did enjoy this exercise and will definitely be able to utilize in the classroom some of the tools presented.
